Your Impact

This is a broad and foundational data engineering role for Product Analytics. You will be a technical leader responsible for setting the vision, designing, building, and maintaining the large-scale data pipelines and platforms that ingest, process, and serve complex data from across Axon's ecosystem. You will own the entire data lifecycle, from ingestion to serving.

Your work will empower data scientists, analysts, product managers, and engineers with high-quality, accessible, and reliable data to understand product adoption, inform product strategy and improve user experiences. You'll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure our data architecture supports everything from real-time analytics to machine learning, and you'll be a key champion in advancing Axon's data engineering culture, standards and best practices.

The main challenge and therefore opportunity for this role at this stage of the company is to create a sophisticated yet simple data infrastructure. This means making it easy for software engineers to send data to the Product Analytics platform and benefiting from that incredibly quickly provided they adopt a common interface you will build and follow guardrails designed to scale event tracking with low customization on a product-by-product basis.

Therefore, you must be skilled in making early decisions that won't become substantial technical debt in 6 months, in identifying where to balance speed vs. scale knowing that the company is growing fast. The ability of building lean and reliably for now in a way that can scale later is a major differentiator for this role, as is the ability to communicate directly with software and hardware engineers in a way that influences their choices and paradigms in product instrumentation geared towards business analytics.

What You'll Do

Location: Work from home as much as you want, live nearby any of our awesome US R&D Hubs (Seattle, Scottsdale, Atlanta, or Boston) so you can easily collab in-person when it's helpful and be an active part of our vibrant Axon culture.

Foundational Infrastructure Architecture: conceptualize the mechanism, guardrails and architect the data stack to make it easy for product and engineering leaders to instrument and publish their product telemetry data to a modern data warehouse with low operational overhead.
Pipeline Development: Architect and build data ingestion pipelines from internal data sources, third-party APIs, and external sources. Set up lean, simple, reliable and easy-to-maintain pipelines. Create robust logging, monitoring, and alerting for pipelines.
Event Tracking Strategy and Instrumentation: act as key stakeholder and thought leader, partnering closely with product managers and engineering teams to define a scalable event tracking framework and "source of truth" event schema, including clean taxonomy, naming conventions, user properties and key events required for a foundational set of uses cases for Product Analytics and product adoption metrics. Keep close communication with frontend/backend engineers who instrument their products and educate them on best practices, especially "right the first time" event design.
Data Modeling: conceptualize, architect and implement data layers that simplifies access and empowers non-technical stakeholders by providing clean, trusted datasets via self-serve reporting tools. Ensure data accuracy by enforcing through technology "single version of truth", data testing and automated validation/feedback loops. Implement version control, testing, and documentation of core data models.
Operational Excellence: drive confidence, clarity and consistency. Define how the Product Analytics Data Engineering function measure its own success (i.e. KPIs, system health metrics) and SLAs. Ensure foundational governance, security and compliance. Design and build with future compliance needs in scope. Massively reduce dependence tribal knowledge by creating clear, succinct and easy-to-discover documentation.

What You Bring

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
7-10+ years of professional experience in data engineering, software engineering, or related fields.
Proven experience building data infrastructure using modern cloud services, data lake and warehouse technologies (e.g. Azure, AWS, Snowflake, DBT, Fivetran).
Strong proficiency with programming languages used in data engineering (Python, Scala, SQL, etc.).
Deep understanding of distributed systems, data partitioning, and performance optimization.
Experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow, Azure Data Factory, or similar.
Familiarity with data governance, security, and compliance best practices.
Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.

The Pay: Axon is a total compensation company, meaning compensation is made up of base pay, bonus, and stock awards. The starting base pay for this role is between USD 145,275 in the lowest geographic market and USD 232,440 in the highest geographic market. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: level, function, training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, geographic market, and often a combination of all these factors.
