Data Scientist with advanced biostatistical expertise to lead healthcare analytics initiatives that support quality measurement and performance improvement across the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This role is central to assisting our clients in transforming complex health data into actionable insights that enhance patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and evidence-based decision-making.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Biostatistical Analysis & Study Design
- Apply advanced biostatistical methods, including hypothesis testing, mixed-effects models, and longitudinal analysis, to evaluate clinical and operational data
- Design and execute analytic studies to assess causality, control for confounding, and quantify uncertainty in healthcare and other relevant operational datasets
- Provide methodological consultation for research, quality improvement, and program evaluation initiatives
- Develop predictive models and risk stratification tools to support population health and patient safety efforts
Metric Development & Oversight
- Validate and recommend statistically valid healthcare performance measures
- Lead multidisciplinary metric workgroups involving clinicians, analysts, and stakeholders
- Collaborate with data owners to ensure data integrity, validity, and consistent definitions
- Establish statistically significant thresholds and confidence intervals to interpret clinical and operational impact
Target Setting & Benchmarking
- Use biostatistical techniques to set performance targets informed by CMS, NCQA, HEDIS, and Joint Commission standards
- Conduct comparative analyses across peer organizations and population health benchmarks
Reporting & Visualization
- Translate complex statistical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for clinical and operational audiences
- Develop dashboards and visualizations using Tableau, Power BI, or Python libraries to communicate trends and outcomes
- Create executive summaries and presentations tailored to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Data Governance & Compliance
- Ensure all analytic activities comply with HIPAA, data privacy regulations, and institutional policies
- Maintain reproducible workflows and metadata documentation for transparency and auditability
Ad Hoc Analytics & Strategic Support
- Deliver rapid-cycle statistical analyses to support population health initiatives and patient safety priorities
- Support strategic decision-making through timely, data-driven insights
Minimum Qualifications- Master’s or PhD in Biostatistics, Health Informatics, Data Science, or a related quantitative discipline
- 3+ years of experience in healthcare analytics with demonstrated proficiency in statistical modeling and interpretation
- Extensive experience with healthcare data types (e.g., claims, EMR, registries, surveys); VHA CDW experience preferred
- Strong command of biostatistical techniques, including hypothesis testing, regression modeling, and time-to-event analysis
- Proficient in R, SAS, Python, SQL, and data visualization tools
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate statistical concepts for clinical and operational teams
- Authorized to work in the U.S. indefinitely without sponsorship.
- Ability to obtain public trust.
Preferred Qualification- Experience building semantic data models in Power BI and Analysis Services Tabular.
- Proficiency with DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) to create custom measures, KPIs, and dynamic reporting.
- Ability to translate business requirements into intuitive data structures and reusable logic.
