Specialty Building Products is currently looking for a Senior Azure Data Engineer to join our growing Data & Analytics team. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on engineering position focused on designing, building, and optimizing SBP’s Azure-based data platform. The Senior Azure Data Engineer will play a critical role in developing reliable and scalable pipelines, mentoring team members, and enabling analytics and application-driven use cases across the enterprise.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable ELT/ETL pipelines using Python, Spark, and orchestration tools such as Azure Data Factory (ADF), Synapse workflows, and Fabric Data Pipelines.
- Model data for application-level and analytical use cases, ensuring consistency, performance, and alignment with business needs.
- Expand and optimize SBP’s Azure data platform, including ADLS Gen2, Event Hubs, Synapse/Databricks, and Fabric Lakehouses.
- Consolidate and transform data from diverse sources including ERPs, operational systems, PIM, MDM, supplier feeds, and internal applications.
- Build and maintain frameworks for ingestion, transformation, and storage to ensure scalability, reusability, and performance.
- Publish curated datasets and tools that empower analysts, engineers, and data scientists with self-service capabilities.
- Implement monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices to meet data freshness and uptime SLAs.
- Assist in cataloging, access controls, and quality monitoring, ensuring data meets standards for compliance and reliability.
- Provide guidance to junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, best practices, and informal mentorship.
Required Experience & Skills:
- 5–7 years of professional experience delivering production-grade data solutions within the Azure ecosystem.
- Strong expertise in Python, Spark, and SQL for data engineering at scale.
- Proven track record in designing and operating ELT/ETL pipelines with Azure ADF, Synapse, Fabric, or Databricks.
- Hands-on experience with Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS Gen2/Delta Lake), Event Hubs/Kafka, and related services.
- Experience modeling transactional and operational data (ERP, order lines, shipments, receipts, inventory, pricing, returns).
- Demonstrated ability to deliver reliable pipelines meeting freshness/uptime SLAs, with observability practices (Application Insights, Log Analytics, or equivalent).
- Experience applying Generative AI/LLM-enabled approaches to engineering productivity (e.g., code generation, automated testing, pipeline scaffolding).
Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or related quantitative discipline.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203).
- Experience with CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) in Azure environments (Terraform, Bicep, Azure DevOps).
- Familiarity with DataOps principles: automated builds, releases, monitoring, and scaling of pipelines.
- Experience with advanced data engineering techniques: feature engineering, dimensional modeling, and performance tuning.
- Streaming pipeline development experience (Event Hubs/Kafka) in production environments.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric for analytics, governance, and scalable data solutions.
