The Data Analyst/Engineer II is responsible for designing, developing, and operating structured databases to optimize usage and accessibility. Manages data integration and coordinates other efforts related to infrastructure as directed.
The Northcott Lab in the Center of Excellence in Neuro-Oncology Sciences (CENOS) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking a highly motivated and proficient Data Analyst/Engineer II. CENOS is a collaborative, discovery-driven translational research program with a mission to improve survival and morbidity for children with brain tumors. Through application of cutting-edge molecular approaches to unique and data-rich cohorts, members of this program are efficiently translating laboratory findings into clinical practice and treatment innovations.
The successful candidate will contribute to the management, usage, and accessibility of unprecedented multi-‘omics datasets obtained from children with malignant brain cancer. Through application of structured/unstructured databases, storage and integration of large multi-modal datasets, including bulk, single-cell, and spatial profiles, we aim to make novel insights with real-world clinical implications.
The candidate will work closely with bioinformatics personnel within CENOS to play a role in exciting collaborations, both within St. Jude and with prominent external collaborators. A deep understanding of database development, maintenance, and optimization are essential for this position. The successful recruit must have the capacity to execute proficient data storage, management, and integration strategies and troubleshoot independently, communicate effectively with the PI and collaborators across diverse disciplines, and thrive in a highly collaborative team environment.
The ideal candidate should have:

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, and/or data science.

Minimum experience: 2+ year of experience in the design of databases and ETL processes

Familiarity with genomic datasets (e.g. whole-genome/exome sequencing, RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq/CUT&RUN, Hi-C, DNA methylation, single-cell/nucleus RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, and quantitative proteomics)

Experience in programming querying languages

Some experience creating dashboards using data visualization tools (e.g. Shiny, Dash, Tableau, etc.)

Experience in at least one programming or scripting language, preferred.
Job Responsibilities:

Design and develop structured and unstructured databases and/or data loading processes to optimize information use.

Document data model, database, ETL, data mapping, and data integration including documentation of business processes and data storage.

Write testable ETL processes and/or code, using industry best practices and Continuous Integration-Continuous Delivery (CICD) / DevOps processes.

Implement data quality and departmental standards in line with organizational expectations.

Prepare and submit reports on data validation and loading to communicate data load progress to stakeholders and management.

Supports and recommends improvements to databases and/or ETL operational processes including automation, monitoring, and job scheduling.

Perform database, SQL, and/or ETL performance tuning.

(For Analytics Development) Assist with processes/activities within area with limited guidance (e.g., business requirement analysis; technical design; dashboard development, testing, maintenance, and refresh).

Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution.

Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $78,000 - $139,360 per year for the role of Data Analyst/Engineer II.
