Role Summary

Rivian Volkswagen's Vehicle Access team is seeking a talented individual to join our growing data science function. This is a unique opportunity to shape our data strategy from the ground up, transforming raw vehicle data into actionable insights and intelligent systems that enhance the customer experience.

About The Team

The Vehicle Access team is at the forefront of innovating how customers interact with their vehicles. Our data science team is small but growing, with a focus on leveraging data to understand system health, predict issues, and personalize the vehicle access journey. We work on establishing the strategic direction for data science and machine learning within the team, and will have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on our processes and products.

The Opportunity

Work with rich datasets with hundreds of vehicle access signals that hold immense potential for analytics and machine learning. As a Data Scientist on our team, you will play a crucial role in unlocking this potential. This is a pivotal moment for the Rivian Volkswagen joint venture, and you'll play a significant part in defining and shaping the data strategy for vehicle access. You will work closely with product and engineering teams to build a robust data foundation, generate critical insights, and contribute to the development of cutting-edge machine learning models.

Responsibilities

Data Foundation & Documentation: Contribute to the critical effort of documenting hundreds of raw vehicle access signals, understanding their meaning and utility.
Data Pipeline Development: Streamline the process of creating aggregated data tables from raw data, building robust and efficient data pipelines for analytics and ML readiness.
Analytics & Dashboarding: Immediately contribute to the development and deployment of analytics dashboards (using tools like Tableau, Hex, Looker) to monitor the health of existing and new vehicle access features.
Metric Definition: Collaborate with product teams to define key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics that accurately reflect the health and performance of the vehicle access system.
Data Validation & Quality: Have great attention to detail in verifying the instrumentation of raw signals and validating the accuracy and reliability of insights generated from your analysis.
Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with software engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand business needs, technical constraints, and data requirements.
Problem Solving: Navigate ambiguous situations with a proactive and focused approach, identifying solutions and driving projects forward.
Machine Learning: Contribute to the design, development, and deployment of machine learning models to predict potential issues and offer personalized recommendations for an enhanced customer experience.
Ownership: Take ownership of projects from inception to completion, ensuring high-quality deliverables and timely execution.
Continuous Learning: Be humble, willing to learn new technologies, methodologies, and domain-specific knowledge in the rapidly evolving EV space.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, Master’s or PhD in a technical field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
10+ years of experience in a data science/engineering role.
Expert-level proficiency in Python and its scientific computing ecosystem (e.g., Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Pandas) for data analysis and ML model development.
Hands-on experience building and deploying dashboards using one or more tools like Tableau, Hex, and/or Looker.
Proficiency in data extraction, manipulation, and analysis.
Proven experience in data analytics, including exploratory data analysis, data visualization, and reporting.
Strong foundational knowledge of statistics and probability with an understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics, sampling methods, hypothesis testing, regression analysis.
Experience working in a distributed team environment, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with partners and colleagues across different time zones.
Exceptional communication skills, with proven experience managing resources, reporting to C-suite executives, and leading technical discussions across diverse engineering groups.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment, self-navigate, and prioritize tasks effectively.

Bonus Points

Experience in or a strong interest in the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry is highly desirable.
Experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
A fundamental, first-principles understanding of the lower OSI layers, including wireless signal propagation, antenna theory, RF concepts, and signal processing.
Familiarity with data warehousing concepts and technologies.
Experience working in a startup environment.

Pay Disclosure

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for California Based Applicants: $190,000 - $258,100 USD (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).

Benefits Summary: Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Full Time Employee coverage is effective on the first day of employment. Part-Time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
