The Metis Foundation is seeking a Clinical Research Data Scientist I to support various projects within the Military Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Program (MiCOR) at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD.

MiCOR is a program intended to understand the impact of military service- particularly precision medicine, stress, weight-gain, exercise, and pharmacotherapy- on cardiovascular risk. The mission of the MiCOR Program is to enhance the cardiovascular health and well-being of the Warfighter and the DoD community through innovative clinical research using precision techniques. MiCOR has a variety of clinical research studies focused on both the biomedical and behavioral components that contribute to cardiovascular risk and disease.

The Metis Foundation is a 501(c)(3) specifically organized to advance clinically relevant scientific research to the medical community, especially within the US Department of Defense (DoD). We provide scientific, educational, financial and project management support in the conduct of federally and industry-sponsored research, clinical trials, and education. The Metis Foundation provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MiCOR and USU.

This position will potentially have duties at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the candidate may be required to obtain a Secret Clearance as well as undergo Credentialing before beginning work.

At the direction of the Lead Data Scientist, the Clinical Research Data Scientist I will help create and maintain code/syntax for data management and analysis, assist in creating electronic data capture (EDC) systems, and work with data from these systems. They will also help create and maintain data flow and data entry documentation and assist investigators with creating and integrating assessments and interventions leveraging current technologies (e.g., ambulatory devices).

Key Responsibilities:

1. Data Management and Analysis:

● Assist in the creation and maintenance of code/syntax related to data management and analysis.

● Work with data from research EDC systems (e.g., data quality checks and monitoring, preparation and cleaning, and analyses).

● Assist with creation and maintenance of research EDC systems that meet all DoD, Defense Health Agency (DHA), USU, and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) IT standards, as well as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) compliance for applicable research protocols within the MiCOR program.

● Aid in the creation and maintenance of documentation pertaining to data flow and management procedures for research protocols within the MiCOR program.

● Assist investigators working on the creation and integration of assessments and interventions utilizing current technologies, such as smartphone applications, wearable electrocardiographic monitors, and ambulatory blood pressure recorders.

2. Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including investigators inside and outside the MiCOR program, physicians, research coordinators, and program managers, to achieve research goals.

● At the direction of the Lead Data Scientist, attend meetings with the research team and other appropriate staff.

● At the direction of the Lead Data Scientist, interface with investigators and medical writers on the production/revision of data management and statistical analysis plans for clinical research protocols.

Please note, this is not an exhaustive list and the Clinical Research Data Scientist I will be expected to perform other duties as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Responsible and self-motivated with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to meet deadlines. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Must have experience/familiarity with research data collection and the scientific method. Must have experience/familiarity with database software (examples include but not limited to: SQL, Oracle, REDCap) as well as modern statistical software (examples include but not limited to: R, Python, SPSS, Stata). Must be familiar with classical (Supervised / Unsupervised) machine learning methods as well as deep learning architecture.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Some prior experience working with clinical research data or working with cross-functional clinical research teams in an academic or healthcare setting. Familiarly with relevant standards and policies relevant to clinical research (e.g., HIPAA, FDA CFR, etc.)

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or related field is required.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) certification for OUSD P&R Human Research (Biomedical Investigators and Research Study Team) preferred, may be obtained upon hire. Must also be able to obtain a government issued common access card (CAC).

Minimum Experience: Previous work experience is not required.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of sitting, carrying light items.

Work Environment: Possible evening and/or weekend hours. Position is fully remote.
