Under general supervision, performs clerical work involving the collection, analysis, and distribution of criminal data to assist law enforcement personnel in identifying suspects, arresting suspects, and solving cases involving child victims. Work involves researching and compiling data, analyzing crime data to identify suspects and crime patterns, maintaining computerized case files, and disseminating crime information to the Sheriff’s Office personnel and other jurisdictions. Reports to a Captain.
- Develops and maintains data collection crime series log serving as an intelligence database: reviews daily reports from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, Virginia State Police, and other law enforcement agencies.

Reviews and analyzes CSAM images, researches suspect names/histories, related incident reports, through computer resources; requests assistance or information from other jurisdictions regarding crimes involving child victims.

Operates and maintains databases in order to report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the Virginia State Police about the status of assigned cases.

Researches and compiles various statistical, demographic, or administrative data: makes applicable calculations; analyzes data and identifies trends; summarizes data and prepares/generates reports and charts; conducts research of department records, maps, criminal records, database records, Internet sites, hardcopy materials, or other sources as needed.

Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, police incident reports, crime analysis reports, NCIC codes, maps, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate.

Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, database, spreadsheet, research, email, Internet, or other computer programs; performs basic maintenance of computer system and office equipment, such as backing up data or replacing paper, ink, or toner.

Maintains file system of various files/records; prepares files, organizes documentation, and files documents in designated order; retrieves/replaces files; shreds/destroys confidential or obsolete documents; ensures proper maintenance of records, confidentiality of information, and release of records to authorized individuals in accordance with established guidelines.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, county officials, law enforcement personnel, other jurisdictions, the public, the media, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Attends various meetings as needed; attends and shares information at daily roll call meetings in the Criminal Investigations Division.

Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include making copies, sending/receiving faxes, filing documentation, or processing incoming/outgoing mail.

Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.

Performs other related duties as required.
Associate’s Degree with course work emphasis in Criminal Justice, Criminal Psychology, or Law Enforcement; supplemented by three (3) years of previous experience and/or training that includes crime analysis, statistical analysis, law enforcement, office administration, database maintenance, and personal computer operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the County and departmental practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Crime Analyst ICAC/CVU.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery, tools, and equipment, such as a motor vehicle, computer, printer, copy machine, fax machine, statistical calculator, or telephone. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually, with job-related equipment. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motions while coordinating the other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).
