America Votes' work has brought together a wide range of causes and built a unified coalition that has transformed how the progressive community works. Racial Equity Statement
As a leader of collaborative efforts to mobilize voters, protect voting rights, and win elections, America Votes is committed to advancing racial equity within our organization and across our coalition. We acknowledge the systematic racism that permeates all facets of our society, including the right to vote. America Votes is also engaging with an understanding of the ways gender, sexuality and other forms of oppression intersect with race and how those relationships impact inequities our staff, our partners, and the communities that we engage in our work face.
America Votes strives to model our commitment to racial equity through our internal and external operations, programs, and partnerships. We acknowledge the inequitable structures that continue to exist and are moving forward with a sustained commitment in time, resources and people to challenge structural racism and work towards creating a reflective organization and democracy.
Position Description
America Votes is looking for a Data Scientist to join our Analytics team for the 2026 cycle and beyond. The ideal candidate is an experienced professional who has prior experience as a data scientist or analyst in an electoral context, a strong foundation in statistics and machine learning, and a vision for how we can use data to answer key questions around targeting, program logistics, and resource allocation such as:
-
How can we estimate the likelihood of a given voter seeing a message from our coalition across modes such as field, mail, phones, digital, and TV?
-
Where should we recommend our partners open their offices to maximize the geographic reach of our coalition's program?
Our analytics team already includes a Data Analyst, who focuses on data visualization and voter contact reporting, and an Analytics Engineer, who transforms our voter contact and voter file data into base tables using dbt. For the Data Scientist role, we're looking for a teammate who can expand our analysis toolkit, using statistics and machine learning to help us deliver new insights faster and with more rigor.
This is a permanent position that reports to the Deputy National Data and Targeting Director and is union-eligible.
Responsibilities
-
Lead analysis projects from ideation to presentation: Work with AV staff across departments to understand questions, plan and execute analyses, and share results with compelling decks, memos, and visualizations.
-
Bring new methods to old questions: Use machine learning to analyze data at a national scale and surface new insights about program strategy and tactics.
-
Proactively look for ways to improve existing products and systems with an eye toward automation and rigor. Collaborate with teammates from analytics, data support, and engineering to implement changes.
-
Evaluate and produce guidance about the predictive models we use in our voter contact work, with a particular focus on race equity considerations.
-
Serve as an analytics leader and coach: Stay up to date with research and best practices. Pitch in to pair program, train staff, or write code for projects that could benefit from more advanced methods.
-
Ensure that racial equity is integrated into all parts of our data work, and proactively look for ways to advance America Votes's organizational commitment to race equity.
-
Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must Haves
-
At least two cycles of experience in a data role at a political campaign or at a progressive organization, especially as an analyst, engineer, or data scientist.

Expert SQL skills - you should have worked in a cloud data warehouse before and be comfortable writing and optimizing complex queries, but also have a sense of when SQL isn't the right tool for the job.
-
Very strong R or Python skills - you should have lots of experience writing code that is clean, modular, and well documented.
-
Track record of using statistics and machine learning to deal with messy data and solve complex problems at scale, from selecting the right method to implementing and explaining your results to stakeholders.
-
A balance of creativity and solid data science foundations - our projects don't lend themselves to off-the-shelf machine learning solutions, so we often need to evaluate and combine multiple methods.
-
A service oriented approach to data work that prioritizes collaboration, supporting staff and partners, centering equity, and building for the long term.
-
Ability to work irregular campaign style hours and travel as needed, especially during the peak months of the electoral cycle.
Nice to Haves
-
Deeper or broader experience with statistics or machine learning, especially for geospatial data, causal inference, or principal component analysis.
-
Past work creating complex data products, bonus points if you've used Streamlit or similar frameworks to build products beyond a typical dashboard.
