About The Role
At Autopoiesis Sciences, we're building the foundation for scientific superintelligence, AI that can autonomously advance knowledge across every scientific discipline. We're first developing an AI co-scientist that applies the same systematic doubt and verification that drives human scientific breakthroughs, establishing the reasoning capabilities necessary for true scientific autonomy. This represents the critical first stage toward systems that can eventually operate laboratories autonomously, design their own research programs, and pursue discoveries beyond human imagination. Backed by leading venture capital firms and with thousands of scientists from top universities already requesting early access, we're currently preparing to release our AI co-scientist to the scientific community.
Research Areas of Interest
- RL methods for scientific reasoning and discovery
- Epistemological frameworks for AI systems
- Autonomous experimental design and hypothesis generation
- Scientific literature analysis and knowledge synthesis
- Verification systems for scientific claims and reproducibility
- Multi-agent collaboration for research tasks
- LLM training for domain-specific scientific reasoning
Autopoiesis Sciences is seeking exceptional Research Engineers to help build the foundation for scientific superintelligence. As a Research Engineer, you will drive the development of novel AI systems that tackle complex scientific challenges and push the boundaries of autonomous research capabilities. Our team operates with fluid boundaries between research and engineering, where you'll lead both theoretical breakthroughs and their implementation into production systems. This role offers the rare opportunity to work on AI systems that could fundamentally transform how scientific discovery is conducted across all disciplines. We're looking for researchers who combine deep algorithmic innovation with strong engineering execution and a passion for advancing the frontiers of AI.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of massive-scale distributed training systems that enable autonomous agents to perform scientific reasoning, literature review, hypothesis generation, and experimental design
- Pioneer novel algorithms and training methodologies that incentivize rigorous scientific methodology, including systematic doubt, peer review, and reproducible research practices
- Collaborate with domain scientists and philosophers of science to encode epistemological principles into AI systems that can distinguish valid scientific reasoning from speculation
- Architect comprehensive evaluation frameworks that measure scientific reasoning capabilities, discovery potential, and adherence to proper epistemic standards across multiple domains
- Drive state-of-the-art advances in autonomous research systems through innovative approaches to training, architecture, and inference optimization
- Lead research initiatives from conception through production deployment, balancing theoretical rigor with practical implementation
- Shape technical strategy and engage with researchers from top universities to gather feedback and drive adoption of our AI co-scientist
Qualifications
- Strong experience with modern ML systems and ability to design and implement distributed machine learning at scale
- Excellent engineering skills including writing production-quality ML code and system optimization
- Experience with autonomous agents, multi-step reasoning, and decision-making systems
- Ability to develop novel training approaches, evaluation methods, and reward structures for complex reasoning
- Deep understanding of modern ML research and scientific computing
- 5+ years of ML research or industry experience
- PhD preferred, Master's minimum in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Physics, or related quantitative field
Compensation And Benefits
- Competitive compensation, equity, and benefits
- Collaborate in building a thoughtful, mission-driven team culture focused on scientific discovery
- Frequent team events, dinners, off-sites, and gatherings
- Compensation packages are highly variable based on experience, expertise, and contribution potential. If your expectations fall outside our stated range, we encourage you to apply regardless. The cash compensation range for this role is $120,000 USD - $280,000 USD, plus equity
