Function:
The Contract Software Engineer (1099, Independent Contractor position) will lead the design, build, and deployment of a standalone Azalea API Application that integrates a client's Microsoft Dynamics CRM with Azalea's billing platform. This application will automate client registration, payer mapping, eligibility verification, and billing workflows, ensuring secure, HIPAA-compliant interoperability between systems. The contractor will work closely with Azalea's internal Product and Engineering teams, a technical partner building code in Microsoft Dynamics, and the client during the discovery, development, and validation phases.
This position is a fixed-term Independent Contractor role (estimated 9–13 months), with potential for extension or conversion to a full-time engineering employee position depending on performance and ongoing project needs.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Lead API Application Development

Design and develop a RESTful API application in Azalea's LAMP/AWS stack.

Implement FHIR-based API endpoints to receive client data from Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

Build custom logic for processing requests per project requirements.

Leverage modern AI coding assistant tools to speed development (Windsurf, CoPilot, etc).
Eligibility Workflow Automation

Develop endpoints to initiate and return 270/271 eligibility transactions (triggering an existing eligibility engine).

Store eligibility responses as structured data in the Azalea EHR.

Support batch and real-time eligibility modes (including mock/test data for sandbox environments).
Billing and RCM Integration

Automate encounter creation, payer assignment, and claim anonymization logic via Azalea's APIs (dev.azaleahealth.com).

Understand and support 837 claim submission and 835 payment posting workflows.
Sandbox and Deployment

Manage sandbox environments connected to Dynamics CRM sandbox for joint testing with external technical resources.

Deploy production-ready code to Azalea-managed AWS environments following internal security and compliance protocols.
Collaboration and Communication

Participate in technical discovery and weekly project calls with stakeholders and technical teams.

Document all API endpoints, logic flows, and deployment processes for eventual transition to Azalea's maintenance team.

Collaborate with Azalea QA to develop and execute test plans for API and data flow validation.
Compliance and Security

Ensure HIPAA compliance and data security in all application components.

Follow Azalea's coding standards and security policies for third-party interoperability.
Qualifications
EducationExperience
-
BS/BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).

5+ years of experience developing secure RESTful APIs in PHP/Laravel or similar frameworks within AWS environments.

Proven experience with healthcare interoperability (FHIR, EDI 270/271/837/835).

Familiarity with Trizetto or similar clearinghouse APIs preferred.

Experience integrating with Microsoft Dynamics CRM or comparable platforms a plus.
Technical Skills

Strong proficiency in PHP, MySQL, Apache, and AWS infrastructure.

Hands-on experience building and consuming FHIR resources.

Understanding of HIPAA and PHI data handling best practices.

Working knowledge of Jira/Bitbucket version control and CI/CD pipelines.

Familiarity with JSON, XML, and healthcare file formats (EDI X12).
