Data Protection Engineer (Contract) – Boston, MA (Hybrid)
Our client, a forward-thinking leader in information security, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Data Protection Engineer for a 6-month contract, with the potential to extend or transition into a permanent role. This is a unique opportunity to lead and own a critical project focused on enhancing enterprise data protection measures. The ideal candidate will be comfortable taking initiative, providing strategic recommendations, and engaging directly with senior stakeholders, including C-level executives.
Compensation: $80/hr - $110/hr (depending on experience and qualifications)
Responsibilities of the Role:

Lead the design and deployment of a comprehensive data protection and DLP strategy utilizing Microsoft Purview and Zscaler.

Develop and implement scalable data classification, labeling, and protection architectures across multiple environments.

Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data flows and define sensitive data requirements, translating business needs into actionable technical policies.

Configure and manage DLP policies, sensitivity labels, and data retention rules within Microsoft 365 and Purview, ensuring alignment with compliance standards.

Set up Zscaler DLP policies to prevent data exfiltration and monitor web and application traffic for sensitive data leaks.

Integrate various data sources, including cloud and legacy systems, leveraging automation tools such as PowerShell and Graph API.

Develop dashboards, reports, and metrics to monitor policy effectiveness and incident trends, driving continuous improvement.

Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, providing recommendations and strategic guidance on data protection initiatives.

Proactively take ownership of the project, initiating actions and communicating effectively with key internal stakeholders, including C-level executives.
Requirements:

Deep expertise with Microsoft Purview and experience deploying DLP solutions.

Strong familiarity with Zscaler DLP policies and network security controls.

Experience with PowerShell scripting, Descaler (nice to have), and automation frameworks.

Ability to independently manage projects, analyze complex data flows, and recommend effective security controls.

Exceptional communication skills, with experience communicating with senior and executive leadership.

Comfortable working in a hybrid environment, with onsite presence three days per week in Boston, MA.
Preferred Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or related field.

5+ years of hands-on experience in data protection, security engineering, or related roles within enterprise environments.

Experience working with regulatory frameworks such as GDPR, SEC, or FINRA is highly preferred.
