Duties & Responsibilities:
The Applications & Analytics Team (A&A), a division of School of Medicine Technology Services (SOMTech), supports all aspects of the mission of the school, and certain overlapping functions of partner institutions the VCU Health System and MCV Physicians, by building and maintaining web applications and data analytics services providing critical insights and support to education, research, and administration. As part of this team, the Data Analyst role represents a strategic investment in advancing the school's business intelligence (BI) initiatives and overall data management capabilities. This position will be instrumental in upholding high data quality standards, facilitating seamless communication between stakeholders and developers, and applying advanced analytical techniques to strengthen data profiling efforts.
By enhancing the BI team's ability to deliver accurate, reliable, and actionable insights, this role will significantly improve operational efficiency and support strategic decision-making across the organization. The Data Analyst will also play a key role in operationalizing data governance practices, ensuring that data policies and procedures are effectively implemented and maintained. This role will also serve as a backup Data Engineer to further support the team's technical resilience, providing coverage and continuity in critical data engineering functions when needed.
The Data Analyst reports to the Assistant Director for Business Intelligence and Analytics and will work with a broad spectrum of data, such as research, finance, workforce, clinical, and education, from various internal and external enterprise systems used by the School of Medicine, MCV Physicians, and the VCU Health system.
- Conduct detailed data analysis across business units to evaluate processes, identify trends, and uncover issues and opportunities. Apply statistical techniques and industry-standard tools (such as SQL, Excel) to interpret complex datasets and generate actionable insights. Perform ad-hoc analyses to support strategic decision-making and respond to real-time inquiries from business and technical teams.
- Develop customized reports by integrating data from multiple sources and writing advanced SQL queries. Ensure reports are timely, accurate, and tailored to specific business questions or operational needs.
- Support rigorous data profiling, validation, and cleansing processes, thereby upholding high standards of data quality and integrity. Monitor and report on data quality using automated tools and manual checks.
- Assist in forming and maintaining data management and governance processes. Promote adherence to data governance principles, including internal audits of dashboards and reports, metadata management, data lineage, and standardized business definitions.
- Act as a liaison in managing stakeholder communications, updates, and requests related to dashboards and data products. Translate business needs into technical requirements and collaborate on design and development of data tools and metrics.
- Serve as the tester for all data development. Develop user acceptance testing and quality assurance test scenarios and cases working with business partners to help ensure delivery meets business requirements.
- Create and maintain end-user training materials such as user guides, knowledge base articles, help videos, and tutorials. Provide support and education to data consumers to enable self-service capabilities.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business information systems, data science, computer science, information technology or related field or equivalent education and experience.
- 2 years of proven experience using data analysis tools such as SQL, Python, R, or similar.
- Experience in systems and data analysis, requirements gathering and specification documentation.
- Experience in technical writing and systems training.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Experience with BI platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar.
- Experience working with database and data warehouse platforms such as SQL Server, Oracle, and Snowflake.
- Familiarity with data warehousing concepts and ETL processes.
- Understanding of data governance frameworks and data quality standards.
- Basic knowledge of data engineering tools and practices.
- Experience creating training materials and conducting user training sessions.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000
