Introduction
Maryland Benefits (MD Benefits) is a dynamic, cloud-based platform. This enterprise-wide digital service allows organizations to build, test, host, operate, and integrate mission-driven applications, data, and emerging technologies. MD Benefits offers cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) capabilities, a shared data architecture, and product development services, all developed by the State of Maryland to help multiple agencies deliver and manage health, human, and social service benefits and programs. On July 1, 2025, the operation of the MD Benefits shared platform and statewide applications transitioned from the Department of Human Services (DHS) to the Department of Information Technology (DoIT).

Main Purpose
The Data Analyst is pivotal in unlocking the potential of data, steering business decisions, and fostering our organization's growth. They are crucial in enhancing our ability to utilize data for informed decision-making. The Data Analyst, possessing expertise in supporting business users through self-service analytics, empowers users to independently explore and analyze data, thereby facilitating data-driven decision-making across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Self-Service Analytics Enablement: Collaborate closely with business users to understand their data analysis needs and provide guidance on leveraging AWS QuickSight for self-service analytics.
- Data Visualization: Craft visually engaging and user-friendly dashboards and reports in AWS QuickSight, enabling business users to glean insights from data effortlessly.
- User Training: Develop and execute training programs and workshops to educate business users on AWS QuickSight features, best practices, and self-service analytics techniques. Provide comprehensive training to end-users and stakeholders on AWS QuickSight functionality, offering ongoing support and guidance.
- Data Exploration Support: Assist business users in exploring data, constructing ad-hoc queries, and generating custom reports to address specific questions or tackle business challenges.
- Data Governance: Collaborate with the data governance team to ensure that self-service analytics align with data security and privacy policies. Work closely with cross-functional teams, including business analysts, IT professionals, and other stakeholders, to understand data requirements and deliver actionable insights.
- Performance Optimization: Continuously monitor and optimize AWS QuickSight resources to ensure a smooth user experience.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field. Will accept 7 years of experience in lieu of education
- Experience: 5+ Years of IT experience as a Data Analyst and 2+ years of specialization in self-service analytics
- Skills:
- Strong data visualization skills, creating compelling and easy-to-understand dashboards.
- Proficiency in SQL is a must.
- Excellent communication and training abilities.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- In-depth knowledge of data governance and data security best practices.
- Proficiency in data exploration and querying is essential.
- Familiarity with data modeling and data warehousing.
