We are currently looking for a Data Engineer I to join our team at WoodmenLife.
As a Data Engineer I at WoodmenLife, you will be responsible for finding trends in data sets and developing algorithms to help make raw data more useful to the enterprise. You will help transform data into a format that can be easily analyzed. You will also develop, maintain, and test infrastructures for data generation. If you enjoy working closely with data scientists and others who analyze data for trending, forecasting, predictive analysis, etc. then this might be the position for you. If you can utilize a significant set of technical skills, including a deep knowledge of database design and multiple programming languages, you will be a good fit for this position.

What we are looking for:
Creates and maintains an optimal data pipeline architecture
Analyzes and understands data from source and target systems in order to convert different types of data from one system to another. Gathers and analyzes data requirements, which includes data quality, proper data formatting and table structures, balancing of data, and data cleanliness issues
Creates SQL queries to compare data from the source system to the target system for conversion accuracy and quality and to meet audit requirements
Knowledge of data analysis using SQL-based tools
Ensure the creation and maintenance of Data Conversion documentation, including:
Writing database mapping requirements
Reviewing documentation in business areas
Assist with data conversion documentation for internal auditing
Assembles large, complex data sets that meet functional and non-functional business requirements
Identifies, designs, and implements internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
Builds the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and ‘big data’ technologies
Builds analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency, and other key business performance metrics
Keeps data separated and secure across boundaries through multiple data sources and regions
Creates data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader
Understands the information needs of the enterprise, with an emphasis on executive information consumption and data that comes from or is provided to parties external to the enterprise
Leverages internal and external data sources to enhance the consumer experience and create additional opportunities for sales
Collaborates with Solution Architects on architectural decisions to ensure solutions are designed for successful implementation within the vision of the enterprise architecture
Assists in technical discussions with vendors and provides input regarding data storage, consistency, and integrity considerations of the system
May work on more than one enterprise project, engaged up to 50% capacity performing execution activities
Ensures the team follows defined data security and data integrity processes throughout the product lifecycle to achieve delivery dates on time with quality
Ensures the adoption of standards used by engineers and developers to promote repeatable, successful projects
Performs other duties as assigned by management
Minimum Qualifications
This job requires a background that demonstrates the following minimum knowledge, skills, talents, and traits:
Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL), as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases
Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures, and data sets, utilizing the Microsoft stack with ADF and SSIS.
Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement
Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets
Experience building processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management
A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large, disconnected datasets
Strong project management and organizational skills
Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
Ability to engage well with others and be passionate about providing an exemplary customer experience
Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated experience using the following (preferred, not required)
Relational SQL and NoSQL data sources (e.g., MS SQL, MarkLogic, Snowflake)
Data pipeline and workflow management tools (e.g., ADF, Airflow, and SSIS)
Stream-processing systems (e.g., Storm, Spark-Streaming)
Object-oriented/object-function scripting languages (e.g., Python, Java, C++, Scala)
Knowledge of the insurance and financial services industry
Broad multi-platform, multi-technology development experience
Prior job experience as a data engineer or data architect is a plus
High level of data security awareness
Ability to motivate and gain acceptance for your ideas
Ability to define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and manage multiple project deadlines
